Preparing for CIC®, LTC-CIP® and a-IPC TM Recertification by IPUs? Start with These Essential Resources.
Recertifying through Infection Prevention Units (IPUs) is a great way to demonstrate your continued professional growth and commitment to infection prevention and control. To help you successfully navigate the process, CBIC offers several resources to guide you every step of the way.
1. IPU Criteria Chart
The IPU Criteria Chart provides a clear breakdown of each IPU category, including:
- Eligible activity types
- Examples of accepted providers
- Supporting documentation requirements for each category
This is a great starting point to determine whether your activities qualify for IPUs. It is recommended to save, print, or download this PDF chart to assist you with your IPU portfolio.

2. IPU Manual
For a thorough understanding of the recertification process, the IPU Manual is a great go-to resource. It provides detailed information on:
- The complete process of recertification by IPUs
- IPU requirements and eligibility
- Content domains
- Documentation expectations
3. Navigating IPU Portfolio Video Tutorial
CBIC has prepared a step-by-step tutorial for guidance on how to access, navigate, and manage your IPU portfolio. This tutorial is a helpful resource to ensure you’re familiar with the process when submitting and maintaining your IPUs.
Set Yourself Up for Success!
Reviewing these resources before submitting your portfolio can help ensure your documentation is complete, and your activities meet CBIC’s recertification requirements.
We encourage all certificants pursuing recertification by IPUs to familiarize themselves with these guides to make the process as smooth as possible.
Important Deadlines to Remember
- December 1st – IPU portfolio deadline December 31st – Examination must be passed by December 31 of your expiration year to avoid a lapse in certification, if you are choosing to take the Proctored Examination instead of recertifying via IPUs.
