All About The IPU Provider Approval Process

Are you hosting a continuing education session related to infection prevention and control? Did you know that your offering might be eligible for Infection Prevention Units (IPUs) through the Certification Board of Infection Control and Epidemiology (CBIC)?

CBIC’s IPU Committee is currently reviewing educational offerings to determine if they qualify for IPUs. Through a peer review process, the Committee makes sure the content is relevant, high-quality, and beneficial to professionals who hold CBIC certification

 IPUs and Why They Matter

Infection Prevention Units (IPUs) recognize continuing education that enhances the professional competency of those certified in infection prevention and control. Earning IPUs helps certificants stay up to date in the field and fulfill requirements for recertification by IPUs.

Eligibility and Requirements

To be eligible for IPU approval, educational offerings must meet the requirements outlined in the CBIC IPU Manual.
Approved offerings should:

  • Be purely scientific in nature.
  • Contain no commercial promotion—  no products, services, or marketing content can be mentioned before, during, or after the session.

(Please note: The IPU Provider Approval Request is only for individuals or organizations awarding IPUs and seeking approval, not for those recertifying their certification. If you need assistance with uploading or obtaining approval for an IPU received toward recertification, please contact CBIC at info@cbic.org.)

Special Note for APIC and IPAC Canada Chapters!

If you’re an APIC or IPAC Canada Chapter, you don’t need to submit the IPU Provider Approval Request Form for infection prevention and control-related activities — such as chapter webinars, conferences, or other educational events. If any APIC or IPAC Canada Chapter has any questions, please contact CBIC via email Info@cbic.org

After Approval

Approved IPU providers will receive the following:

  • An official approval letter from CBIC
  • The CBIC IPU Provider Seal

The approval letter will include details on how to properly use the seal and will confirm the number of IPUs that can be awarded for the specific offering.
